About Violet Agnes
Violet Agnes is a small business originally set up by two working mothers who fell in love with the baskets and bags in a French market and traced them back to Madagascar. We then found that they made hats and hand smocked dresses as well!
Violet Agnes is actually the name of one of our grandmothers and I think it sums us up very well – we are classic with a streak of colour! We love the vibrant colours of all our straw bags, baskets and hats – they are big, bold and beautiful – a bit like us! The hand smocked cotton clothes are quintessentially British.
The children’s clothes are made by the highly skilled artisans in Madagascar whose smocking, cross stitch, embroidery and hand knotting has been highly regarded by many industry insiders. Skill sets are passed down from one generation to the next.
The baskets, bags, hats and hand smocked clothes we import from Madagascar are sourced from wholesalers who support the use of eco friendly, natural and sustainable materials. When you buy a Violet Agnes product, as well as getting a beautiful, one off item, you are directly contributing to both humanitarian and environmental projects in Madagascar, one of the poorest countries in the world.
Handicraft products, such as children’s wear, cannot currently be approved by the Fairtrade Foundation (designed primarily for commodity products) under its Fairtrade Certification System. However, our suppliers follow The World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO) guiding principles.
So come on in and have a look at what we have to offer. You will not be disappointed and I am on hand to help with any queries you may have re sizes or ordering a particular item that is currently out of stock. Or you can come along and meet us face to face at one of our many fairs – check out the calendar for our next outing. I look forward to meeting you either in cyber space or face to face!
